Epson Wins WIPO Prize for Breakthrough Inkjet Printhead Innovation
Award-winning piezoelectric printhead technology enhances compact design, cost efficiency, and high-quality digital printing performance.

Seiko Epson Corporation has received the prestigious WIPO Prize at the 2026 National Commendation for Invention for its innovative inkjet printhead technology. The recognition was awarded for the company’s invention of a compact and cost-effective piezoelectric inkjet printhead structure, highlighting Epson’s continued advancement in digital printing technology.

The award marks Epson’s first WIPO Prize and its fifth recognition at the National Commendation for Invention since 2019. The achievement further strengthens the company’s position as a key innovator in the global inkjet printing industry.

The recognized invention focuses on improving the structure of piezoelectric inkjet printheads by simplifying the design and reducing the number of component layers. Traditional inkjet printhead structures often require additional insulating and protective layers, which can limit performance and increase manufacturing complexity.

Epson’s new technology integrates multiple functions into a thin-film piezoelectric layer and electrode structure, eliminating the need for certain additional layers. This approach enables greater actuator displacement, allowing the development of smaller, more cost-effective printheads while maintaining reliable ink ejection performance.

The innovation also improves durability by optimizing electrode placement and refining wiring structures in areas where stress concentration may occur. This helps reduce the risk of cracks and enhances long-term reliability during high-performance printing operations.

The technology has been incorporated into Epson’s PrecisionCore Micro TFP printheads, which are used across a wide range of Epson inkjet printers for office, commercial, and industrial printing applications. These printheads support high-resolution and stable output while contributing to the broader adoption of inkjet printing solutions.

Beyond Epson-branded products, the company also supplies these printheads to various commercial and industrial printer manufacturers worldwide. The technology supports diverse printing applications and is helping expand inkjet capabilities across multiple industries.

According to Epson, the innovation also contributes to more sustainable printing by supporting lower power consumption and reduced material waste compared with traditional printing methods. The technology is being explored for future applications beyond printing, including potential use in semiconductor manufacturing processes.

The WIPO Prize recognition reflects the growing importance of advanced printhead technologies in shaping the future of digital printing. Through continued investment in inkjet innovation, Epson aims to support higher-quality, efficient, and environmentally responsible printing solutions for global markets.
