HP’s Appadurai Highlights Digital Printing’s Role in Winning Gen Z Through Packaging
Personalization, sustainability and digital printing are reshaping packaging into a powerful brand engagement tool, says HP.

Packaging is rapidly evolving from a functional necessity into a strategic branding tool, with digital printing, personalization and sustainability emerging as critical factors in attracting younger consumers. Speaking at the Spectaledge event hosted by HP, SpectalPack and Redington in Bengaluru, HP’s A. Appadurai highlighted how brands are redefining packaging to build stronger customer engagement.

Appadurai noted that today’s brands compete not only for visibility on retail shelves but also for consumer attention across digital platforms. Every interaction with a product—from online discovery and purchase to product use and social media sharing—creates opportunities to influence buying decisions and strengthen brand perception.

He pointed out that changing consumer demographics are reshaping packaging strategies. With Millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha making up nearly 65% of India’s population, demand is increasing for products that offer convenience, sustainability and personalized experiences. At the same time, shorter product life cycles are encouraging brands to introduce new products and refreshed packaging designs more frequently.

According to Appadurai, digital printing has become an important enabler of this transformation. The technology supports variable graphics, short production runs and on-demand customization while helping reduce waste. Brands can now produce personalized packaging—even in single-unit quantities—allowing them to respond quickly to campaigns, regional preferences and seasonal promotions.

He cited several international brand campaigns where customized packaging featuring individual names, regional languages and limited-edition artwork significantly improved customer engagement, boosted sales and generated strong social media visibility. Such initiatives, he said, help brands establish deeper emotional connections with consumers.

Packaging is also becoming an effective storytelling medium. Consumers increasingly want greater transparency regarding product origin, manufacturing practices and sustainability initiatives. Appadurai explained that brands can use packaging to communicate these values, highlight supply chain information and strengthen trust among environmentally conscious buyers.

He added that advancements in digital printing technology and workflow software now enable brands to create highly targeted packaging for co-branding initiatives, promotional campaigns, seasonal editions and personalized consumer experiences. These capabilities not only enhance customer loyalty but also create new opportunities for business growth in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
