Polaris Trykk invests in Ricoh digital printing technology to enhance flexibility, sustainability, and short-run newspaper production.
Polaris Trykk is investing in new digital printing technology at Orkanger. The new production line will provide greater flexibility, enable efficient production of smaller print runs, and open up new opportunities in both newspaper production and commercial printing. The investment will also contribute to more sustainable production.
Polaris Trykk is investing in a complete, state-of-the-art digital production solution from Ricoh, which is scheduled to be operational in Orkanger from January 2027.
Polaris Trykk is Norway’s leading nationwide newspaper printing company, with five printing plants located in Orkanger, Ålesund, Alta, Harstad, and Arendal. This geographical presence gives the company a strong position for the production and distribution of printed products across the country.
“This is an important step in the development of our print production. We are acquiring technology that is well suited to a media landscape where print runs are becoming smaller, while the need for flexibility and targeted products is increasing. The investment provides new opportunities to adapt production to the market and our customers,” says Oddvar Ustad, Managing Director of Polaris Trykk.
Will Help Extend the Lifespan of Printed Newspapers
Offset printing remains the most efficient production method for large print runs. As print runs decrease, digital printing offers greater flexibility and the ability to produce more efficiently.
“We still believe printed newspapers will play an important role for many of our media houses and readers. Digital printing gives us a new tool that makes it easier to adapt production to market developments. In this way, the technology can help extend the lifespan of printed newspapers,” says Ustad.
More Sustainable Production
Digital printing enables the production of smaller quantities and better alignment of print runs with actual demand. This reduces overproduction and waste, and improves the utilization of both raw materials and production capacity.
“For us, sustainability is also about producing the right quantity, at the right time, with minimal waste. Better alignment between print runs and demand leads to more efficient use of resources,” says Ustad.
New Opportunities
The new technology also enables shorter runs and more targeted products, including magazines, themed supplements, customer newspapers, special editions, and other printed materials.
At the same time, production between the printing plants in Orkanger and Ålesund will be further optimized. Orkanger will take on a stronger role in newspaper production and smaller titles, while Ålesund will focus more on larger newspaper production and commercial printing.
“We have five printing plants with high expertise and skilled employees, from Alta in the north to Arendal in the south. The new technology allows us to better utilize our capacity and expertise, strengthening Polaris Trykk as a forward-looking production partner,” says Ustad.
